Study to examine causes of motorcycle accidents

Motorcycles are without a doubt exhilarating to ride, but the risk of injury or death is significant compared to the risks for occupants in cars or trucks. Motorcycle riders are 300 percent more likely to be injured in an accident than an occupant of a car involved in the same accident, according to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration.

At Recht Law Offices, our motorcycle accident lawyers know first-hand how bike crashes can destroy lives and welcome any efforts that may lead to a reduction in the number of injuries or deaths on the road. We look forward to finding out the results of an interesting new study that will focus on the safety of motorcyclists.

The study examining the causes of motorcycle accidents will be conducted on the other side of the globe – at Monash University in Australia. According to the Herald Sun in Australia, 1,100 people, including survivors of motorcycle crashes, will be recruited over the next year and a half. Researchers will analyze contributing factors in motorcycle accidents such as speed and the physical environment. The new research is being touted by Australian officials as the most comprehensive motorcycle accident studies every attempted globally.

According to the Herald Sun, Transport Minister Terry Mulder said the study will look at what went wrong for riders involved in a crash at a specific site and what went right for those who traveled through the same site.

The researchers will directly approach injured riders admitted to hospitals after motorcycle crashes. They also will attempt to contact people who successfully negotiated a spot where another motorcyclist crashed by photographing license plates and recording the speed of the riders who did not crash. Monash University announced that results are expected toward the end of 2013.
